Qualcomm Agrees To Sell Augmented Reality Software Platform

Qualcomm has gone ahead and sold off its augmented reality business for a hefty $65 million.

Vuforia is a mobile vision platform for augmented reality, which superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world.

The two said that PTC will acquire Vuforia and its developer ecosystem.

Vuforia’s platform allows mobile apps to interact and connect with the world around them, providing immersive experiences for gaming and multimedia. As of 2015, Vuforia – which supports multiple developer tools, including Eclipse, xCode, and Unity – powers more than 20,000 apps and has more than 200 million app installations worldwide.

PTC says it will now look to integrate Vuforia and PTC into its existing work with the Internet of Things (IoT) and AR as it aims to, “deliver a new class of products that merge the digital and physical worlds”. In the five years since its launch, Vuforia has become an industry leading platform. “We are excited about leveraging Vuforia’s technology leadership in the consumer market while unleashing [its] capabilities into the enterprise”. “I look forward to leading the team under PTC.”. As a result of cost synergies and investment plans, PTC does not expect Vuforia to impact its FY’16 non-GAAP EPS.

Now the developer ecosystem that’s grown up around the technology will be under new ownership by the end of the year, though representatives of both Qualcomm and PTC promise that the platform will continue to be developed and supported.
