Ryan Harrison, trumpeted for years as America’s next big tennis star before he was written off as a case of unfulfilled potential, scored the biggest win of his career on Wednesday.

The result is a major disappointment for Raonic, who reached the Wimbledon final earlier this summer and was considered by many pundits to be one of the top three contenders for the U.S. Open title along with Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and British world No. 2 Andy Murray. Last year, when she was recovering from mononucleosis, she started a new tradition of skipping practice.

A trainer came out again later, this time to work on Raonic’s left leg, which seemed to be cramping.

She began to hyperventilate while serving to force a tiebreaker in the second set on Court 13 and then fell to her knees on the baseline.

Nadal, who lost an Italian Fabio Fognini past year, won a tight second set but otherwise played well and hasn’t lost a set in two matches.

Frenchman Gael Monfils rolled into the third-round with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jan Satral, setting up a matchup with Spain’s Nicolas Almagro who ousted 18 seed Pablo Cuvas 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (9).

Raonic required a medical timeout at one point and received treatment for his wrist.

While Christian lost in the first round on Tuesday, Ryan took pleasure in being joined in the third round by a couple of other Americans: No. 20 John Isner beat Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-3, and No. 26 Jack Sock defeated Mischa Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

Her ranking down to 74th after an ankle injury and on-court struggles, Wozniacki is unseeded at the U.S. Open for the first time since her debut in 2007.

Harrison, meanwhile, earned his first trip to the third round at a Grand Slam tournament.

Raonic, seeded fifth, had been among the favourites to be crowned champion at Flushing Meadows, after an excellent season that has included reaching the semi-final at the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, made the last 32 of a major for the 33rd successive time without hitting a ball when Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic withdrew from their second round encounter suffering an inflammation of the left forearm.

“I’m very, very disappointed right now”, the 23-year-old Vesely said.

Vesely, who beat Djokovic on clay in Monte Carlo in April, said the muscles were starting to pinch a nerve, causing numbness.

Seventh-seeded Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champ, needed 1 hour, 40 minutes to top Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.

Harrison got going in the second set.

I think that he will and, in many ways, it would be great if he could make a run at the U.S. Open.

Canada's Milos Raonic seeded fifth at the U.S. Open lost his second-round match Wednesday to American Ryan Harrison ranked 120th in the world
