Qualifying results for Watkins Glen as Carl Edwards wins pole

Joey Logano showed he can race on any type of track past year when he swept the Watkins Glen International NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and XFINITY Series contests.

Edwards, who was second quick in the first round, improved his position with a lap of 126.562mph (69.689-seconds) for his 20th career Cup pole, his career-best fourth of the season and his second at Watkins Glen International.

Allmendinger crashed the Chase with a win at Watkins Glen International in 2014 and will try to do it again in 2016 with a visit to Victory Lane in Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at The Glen. “I think really what’s on hold is just getting his health back and then, there’s no question, our feelings for Dale and, I think, his feelings for us and I think when the time is right we’ll address all that”. Kyle Larson finished in second place, followed by five time WGI victor Tony Stewart in the three spot.

Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, AJ Allmendinger, Jamie McMurray, Michael McDowell and Brad Keselowski completed the top 12.

With an enhanced sponsor commitment from Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Boats, Martin Truex Jr. has agreed to a two-year contract extension with Denver, Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing.

Stenhouse made the initial mistake and Truex simply exacted revenge. I got to talk to Boris Said, who’s basically my road racing coach to start, so that was cool today. So he is just telling me do this treatment, take these medications, do this every day and, ‘I promise you we are going to get you right.’ And that is not the conversation (retirement) you are going to have in the middle of treatment with someone who is suffering or someone who is going through that process. It was not like he was on his lap. “I was glad we were chosen and it was our turn to come do a test and I was happy it was a road course, especially as bad a job as I did at Sonoma a few weeks ago”.

“There aren’t any road-course ringers, ” driver Tony Stewart said. “Here it’s really easy to mess somebody up”. Jimmie Johnson registered 13th, Chase Elliott 16th, Jeff Gordon 21st and Kasey Kahne 23rd.

And in shifting his focus back to the racetrack on Friday afternoon, Edwards eagerly jumped back to Chris Buescher’s stunning victory last weekend at Pocono Raceway. Buescher is now in 31st place, and if he can move into the top 30 he’ll earn a playoff spot. On the season, he has one win, eight top-five and 13 top-10 finishes, and five of those top-fives have come in the past nine races. The first round was briefly red-flagged for debris after Paul Menard went off course in the inner loop, or bus stop, at the top of the esses with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first session.

Even though Edwards’ No. 19 Camry was fastest in qualifying, he expects stiff competition on Sunday from his Toyota brethren.

Earnhardt said he speaks with his doctors numerous times a week but they will wait until he is symptom-free to create a timeline for his return.
