The day after Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, President Obama shook hands with Her Royal Majesty, who wore a sky blue suit with a wrap to protect her hair from the wind. “Wouldn’t it be nice to get up and go into another room and find your possible outfits all ready – wouldn’t that be lovely instead of ferreting around in the back of a dark wardrobe thinking ‘Oh s**t what am I going to wear today?’ It’s the secret to looking young like the Queen”.

On Thursday, she achieved another milestone as the nation’s first sovereign to celebrate her 90th birthday. And she and her husband, Prince Philip, who is 94, are on a “walkabout”, greeting well-wishers. Some members of the public broke out in a rendition of Happy Birthday as the Queen accepted bouquets outside Windsor Castle’s Henry VIII gate.

Bradford Cathedral opened a book for the public to write their own birthday wishes and prayers in. “We want to show that all of Bradford’s communities are united in wishing her a wonderful birthday”.

Among those who helped celebrate the day were her two sons, one of which turns 80 today, her granddaughter, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, one of which turns one year old on the Saturday, joined her for a celebration.

Shortly before 2pm, the Queen then unveiled a plaque marking The Queen’s Walkway, a 6.3km trail that links 63 significant points across the town.

The Queen was also presented with a cake by Great British Bake Off victor Nadiya Hussain. The three-tier confection took four days to make and used 42 eggs.

But just because it’s her special day, that’s doesn’t mean Her Majesty won’t be working.

Prime Minister David Cameron is due to lead political tributes in a “humble address” in parliament, an occasion which could prove awkward for opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, an ardent republican.

The Queen was dressed in what was described by Buckingham Palace as a “spring grass green” wool and silk weave coat and dress with hat to match adorned with flowers by her dressmaker Angela Kelly for her birthday appearance. She has done a wonderful job over the years.

He said: “I am here to meet the Queen hopefully, I have never met her before, I have never even seen her in the flesh”. The stuttering Bertie became King George VI and Elizabeth, barely 10 years old, was now first in line to the throne.

With the war over and the rebuilding process underway, the country celebrated the marriage of the 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth to Philip Mountbatten in 1947.

“It is a wonderful gesture which I know has deeply touched Her Majesty”, he wrote. “And I think everybody should respect her for all the years that she’s given for her country”, said Donna Werner, an American tourist from New Fairfield, Connecticut.
