During a ceremonial welcome in Berlin, Queen Elizabeth II was presented with a painting of herself alongside her father, King George VI by German President Joachim Gauck.

Merkel and Cameron also held talks earlier on Wednesday, hours after the German chancellor showed the queen around her office opposite the German parliament, pointing out the site of the Berlin Wall, which fell in 1989.

At Thursday’s EU summit, they will discuss, together with the other 26 leaders, how the United Kingdom should negotiate its terms.

The Queen and Prince Philip were the guests of honour at a quintessentially English garden party this evening.

“Mountbatten is Battenburg and Battenburg is coming from my family and I’m also related to the Queen through Queen Victoria – she’s my great, great, great grandmother, something like that”. She said that she had “seen the worst” of her continent – a reference to the conflict.

Commenting on the thousands who had gathered in the old city centre of Frankfurt to catch a glimpse of the Queen he said the monarch was “their Queen”.
