“Canadians who voted for change are disappointed to learn that Prime Minister Trudeau will go to Paris with the same targets as former Prime Minister Harper”, Mulcair told a news conference.
Queen Elizabeth II, the head of the Commonwealth since 1952, wrapped up her three-day state visit to Malta with a trip across the capital Valletta’s Grand Harbour and a visit to the racecourse.
She was toasted at a banquet by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose father Pierre governed Canada for more than a decade from 1968.
In just 40 days since his Liberals won a majority government on October 19, Trudeau has been to a G20 summit in Turkey, an Asia-Pacific leaders’ summit in the Philippines, visited the Queen at Buckingham Palace and now adds Malta and Paris to his resume.
“For a concrete example of that we need look not look much further than our own story and the difficulty we had getting pipelines built because people didn’t believe we were taking our environmental responsibilities seriously”, he said.
“Thank-you Malcolm. It’s been a pleasure”.
Turnbull interjected that Trudeau hasn’t needed any help, calling him “very modest”.
He will also attend a dinner hosted by Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat for the Commonwealth Heads of Government.
At his press conference, the United Nations chief also said, “Now I hope this will [also] be the last place to talk about this and I hope we have a good and ambitious agreement in Paris” referring to the years of effort to rein in greenhouse gas emissions that threaten to radically impact the world as we know it, from rising sea levels overwhelming low-lying island states to devastating droughts and floods.
Developed Commonwealth nations have reaffirmed their pledge to mobilise $100 billion per year by 2020 to help developing countries adapt and mitigate to climate change effects.

India also submitted on October 2, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, its action plan on climate change, called Intended Nationally Determined Contributions, pledging to slash by 33-35 per cent over 15 years, while also pursuing its own sustainable development agenda.
