It’s Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday today, but a few years ago, Aussie Jade Taylor got an unexpected surprise two years ago when she took a selfie with a team member for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

This official photograph, released by Buckingham Palace to mark her 90th birthday, shows Queen Elizabeth II with her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren in the Green Drawing Room, part of Windsor Castle’s semi-State apartments.

Gun salutes took place across Britain Thursday to celebrate the 90th birthday of its longest reigning monarch.

The BBC is showing a documentary that includes rare home-movie footage of the queen as a child in the 1930s and a young mother in the 1950s. “And I think everybody should respect her for all the years that she’s given for her country”, said Donna Werner, an American tourist from New Fairfield, Connecticut.

The children pictured are 2-year-old Mia Tindall, (who’s holding the queen’s handbag), daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall; James, Viscount Severn, 8, and Lady Louise, 12, the children of The Earl and Countess of Wessex; Savannah, 5, and Isla Phillips, 4, daughters of the queen’s eldest grandson Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn; Prince George, 2, and, in Elizabeth’s arms, Princess Charlotte, 11 months, the son and daughter of Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton.

Heir to the throne Charles will stage a lavish private family dinner for the royal matriarch in the evening in the castle – with the event said to be being overseen by his trusted former valet Michael Fawcett.

Britain is living, Prime Minister David Cameron said, in the “modern Elizabethan Era”.

Chris Lucki still remembers the day Queen Elizabeth visited Windsor, Ont., when he was a boy.

Her popular grandchildren have helped bolster the family fortunes.

On Wednesday, Prince William paid tribute to his grandmother.

The world’s media loves bachelor ex-soldier Prince Harry, who, like his brother, has thrown his weight behind numerous charities.

And there is more (much more) to come.

But not everyone in Britain was succumbing to royal-mania. The anti-monarchist group Republic published a resolutely undeferential message headed “Happy Birthday Mrs. Windsor.”“A long life is no reason for a long reign, ” it said.
