Querrey shocks Djokovic at Wimbledon

With his calendar grand slam dreams obliterated, the world champion was asked about his playing schedule, including Rio.

6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5) third round defeat also ended Djokovic’s Open era record run of 30 successive wins at the majors and his streak of having reached 28 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals.

Novak Djokovic was sent crashing out of Wimbledon by big-serving Sam Querrey on Saturday, shattering the World No.1’s hopes of securing the first calendar Grand Slam in 47 years.

A number of matches went relatively as planned but in perhaps the biggest upset of the last 5 years, defending champion Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the tournament by the big-serving American Sam Querrey.

Querrey to the BBC: “It’s incredible, especially to do it here at Wimbledon”.

Rain had saved Djokovic on Friday when the match was halted with him trailing by two sets after being comprehensively outplayed.

On the resumption, the Serb halved the deficit and served for the fourth set at 5-4, only for Querrey to break back.

“I lost to [Mahut] the last two times I played him”. But after the fourth game, just 20 minutes into the set, the rain came again and suspended play. This was crisis time, with the world No.1 just one set from elimination, and when he returned it would be to stay in the match. “Every time he had a break point, I was able to come up with a big serve”.

There were plenty of results Saturday as the rainy tournament cleared a backlog of matches and finally closed the second round.

“It’s a tough road”, Laver said Saturday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from his home in California.

Remarkably, though, Djokovic was broken as he served for the set. When they resumed, Djokovic got to a tiebreaker, which he led 3-1. “I am just going to be happy with this and look forward to the next round a bit”.

Considering Djokovic’s form, he would likely bounce back from a stunning loss same as what he did winning the Madrid Open after an unexpected defeat from Jiri Vesely in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Djokovic had admitted that he hadn’t been “100 percent healthy” in the match with Querrey and was spotted rubbing his left shoulder as the tie slipped away. He played very well and he deserved to win.

Murray, however, has beaten Tsonga in 11 of their last 12 matches, including four times on grass. One of them was at the All England Club past year, when, in similar circumstances against South African Kevin Anderson, the overnight suspension of play gave Djokovic the chance to regroup. But, in the end he could not take it. However Querrey said after winning the match, “I am not going to lie”. Losing at a Grand Slam hurts more than any other tournament.

“I think as soon as Novak loses, you look at Andy and you look at Federer’s eyes light up”.

Raonic also works with former French Open victor Carlos Moya, and said of his team: “They’re definitely giving me a lot of insight on how I need to go about things, how I need to be off the court and also on the court and what things are really going to give me the chance to achieve the ambitions that I have for myself”.
