Questions linger over death of music icon Bowie
The lyricism on “Blackstar” grows wistful as Bowie – long fascinated by space and his separation from his body – reflects on his dwindling time on earth. David Bowie passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer on January 10, 2016. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be.

In a statement on Facebook, he said: “He always did what he wanted to do”. Van Hove worked with Bowie on Lazarus, the musical written by the late star.
“His passing certainly informs the experience of this recording session and will inform the experience of performing the show as we continue to do it”, Hall continued, adding that he was “in a state of awe” at Bowie’s closing run of releases. The singer sings from a hospital bed, blindfolded with buttons for his eyes.
“This way or no way / You know I’ll be free / Just like that bluebird”, Bowie sang over an ominous bassline but with no hint of weakness in his voice.
Other writers have already autopsied the lyrics of Blackstar, so if you’re looking for textual confirmation that Bowie was crooning against the sword of Damocles, well, duh. From its unique verse to its catchy chorus, this is one of Bowie’s most iconic songs for good reason. According to a 1998 press release, the service included a personal email address ([email protected]), access to exclusive music from Rolling Stone and, of course, exclusive content from Bowie and his friends, including live chats with the artist.
Bowie fan Demetri says Bowie was an inspiration for generations of people and popular culture.
While Patti Smith’s legendary Horses album cover was a jolt to the tastes of many conservatives, Bowie had laid the groundwork years earlier.
For “Blackstar“, Bowie sought out McCaslin, a saxophonist who has tested the limits of modern jazz with funk and electronics.
By now an influential symbol of artistic reinvention venturing into the theatre, film and fashion worlds, Bowie continued to innovate, helping produce Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” album.
His voice dueling maze-like with the saxophone, Bowie returns to his fascination with the avant-garde of previous eras.
To that end, much like David Bowie was far more than just an artist, The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars is far more than just an album.
Bowie, who rarely appeared in public and last performed in 2006, turns increasingly introspective as the album draws to a close. “And I realized that it might be the last time I saw him”, said Van Hove.

Sir Paul referenced the part Bowie’s music has played in British musical history, writing on his blog: “I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world”.
