Zimmerman, who visited Irwin at the hospital, says police haven’t determined whether the shooting was premeditated.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters Friday that the 52-year-old was taken into custody and is in critical condition from a gunshot wound but is expected to survive. The identity of this Hispanic man is not released yet.

PDT (0600 GMT) in Southcrest, a neighborhood in southeast San Diego, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said at a news conference.
The officers were shot several times in the torso while making a traffic stop.
Before 8 a.m. on Friday, police investigations led officers to a house in the neighborhood of Shelltown, about a half-mile away from the initial crime scene, according to the Associated Press. She said both fallen officers were wearing body armor when shot, and investigators would examine footage from body cameras that captured the incident on video.
Zimmerman said another news conference would be held later on Friday.
Wade Irwin, 32, underwent surgery after being shot and was expected to survive, Zimmerman said.
The shooting came as departments around the country are on high alert following the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this month.
Jesse Gomez, 52, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after he was found in a ravine nearly immediately after the shooting, suffering from a wound to the chest.
A second man, Marcus Antonio Cassani, 41, was arrested by police. The 43-year-old died at Scripps Mercy Hospital after doctors’ efforts to save him failed.
“One of the officers was placed in the vehicle of another officer that arrived on scene and taken to the hospital”.

“He talked about his family all the time”, she said. “I know him, and this is gut-wrenching”. He had previously received the department’s purple heart after he was stabbed during a traffic stop.
