Paris-based developer VideoLAN on Tuesday announced the arrival of the VLC Media Player for the Apple TV.

The app is also capable of automatically discovering video content on media servers that use the SMB, UPnP, FTP and PLEX protocols.

All this is fine, but the standout feature about the VLC Apple TV app is by far “casting” which will allow you to send your video files directly for any browser or app to the Apple TV. The free, open source app offers support for virtually any media format. You can grab VLC now via the App Store link below, or by searching directly in the Apple TV App Store. All these files will also be stored locally on the Apple TV as long as you have enough storage space.

VLC is one of those fantastic little apps we’ve all come to love, and today Apple TV users can finally get in on the action with the new Apple TV app.

The app’s marquee feature, however, is remote playback. The web interface can also be used to control play, pause, and seek.

Subtitles for the new player are also going to impress you.

Now that ease of use has arrived on the Apple TV following a two month stint in beta, via Apple’s TestFlight service. VLC supports texts such as srt, SSA, WebVTT, bitmap subtitles, and even Right-to-Left languages like Arabic and Hebrew, complex text layout for Malayalam, and other Asian languages. Also, VLC has tapped community service hatchet.is so the music playback function not only displays album artwork, but artist imagery and biographies as well. This player allows you to watch talks and documentation, which is extremely an important feature in education.

The software offers a number of features beyond playback of all file formats, including support for chapter navigation, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, and custom playback speed. However, support for Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box is now being beta tested, and should appear in a future update.
