“Mike had a wonderful turn of phrase and his passion for sport and for Rugby League was always clear”, Mr Greenberg said.
The multi-award winning commentator was best known in his role as host of the Back Page sports program from 1997 to 2012.
Gibson was popular with viewers and a died-in-the-wool sports fan who wore his heart on his sleeve.
Our thoughts are with Mike’s family and friends at this sad time.
Others have turned to social media to express their grief, and the hashtag #RIPGibbo began trending soon after news of Gibson’s death broke.
“Can’t believe we’ve lost the great Mike Gibson“. And I’ve got to say, we had such a wonderful relationship.
Fairfax columnist and former Wallabies player, Peter FitzSimon, also paid tribute to “a great of sports journalism”.
He was a presenter on the show – as well as Sports Sunday – and read the news for Nine until 1988, before leaving for Channel 10, where he presented Olympics coverage in Seoul.
