Authorities told the Orange County Register that officers responding to a call in Orange Park Acres found the bodies of a 68-year-old man and 57-year-old woman.

Outside the home on Thursday, the LA Times reported Robby Gordon fought back tears as he spoke about his loss.

A longtime neighbor confirmed that the couple who lived in the home were relatives of former NASCAR racer Robby Gordon.

Sharon Gordon was strangled and her husband’s death was “consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound”, Orange police Lt. Fred Lopez said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Police Department at 714-744-7444.

The father of race auto driver Robby Gordon shot himself to death after strangling his wife in their Orange County, California, home, the Orange County Coroner’s office said.

NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. was among those offering condolences, writing on his Twitter account he is praying for “the Gordon family during this hard time”.

Robby Gordon reminisced how his father inculcated his love for the motorsports and competition, who is an off-road racer known as “Baja Bob”.

Said Robby Gordon, “I’m so sad and I can’t believe it”.

As you can see above, many in the racing community have sent Gordon their thoughts and prayers.

“I’d like everybody to understand that this is very, very tough”.

Robby has no relation to NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon.

“(Robert) gave me my first ride in an off-road buggy”, NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson told Fox Sports.

Johnson posted on Twitter an image of himself with Bob Gordon at a Sprint Cup race.

Gordon won three races in his NASCAR career, including two in 2003 when he swept the season’s road course races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen. His best finish was fourth in 1999, losing when he ran out of fuel in the closing laps.

Gordon, 47, said he planned to honor this weekend’s off-road commitments at Costa Mesa fairgrounds. He started the Indianapolis 500 on 10 occasions, competed in the NASCAR circuit for over 20 years and also participated in off-road racing events. The driver tweeted Wednesday that his wife had given birth to a boy.
