Rachel McAdams doesn’t play a boxer in her new film Southpaw, but her on-screen husband-played by Jake Gyllenhaal-does, and she said she dove deep into her role in order to play the character right.
JULY 13: (L-R) 50 Cent, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oona Laurence, Rachel McAdams, Miguel Gomez and Terry Claybon attend the ESPN hosted screening of Southpaw at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live on July 13, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. “We got really into chocolate coconut chips”. “I am not a father yet, but it is definitely a dream of mine, should I be lucky to have that to happen”, the Oscar-nominated star told Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier.
“I knew that for me to pull it off in any way, I was just going to have to learn how to do it. And when I set my mind to something, I won’t stop ’til I do it. It’s something I pride myself on.it’s something I hate about myself”. Nowhere near the extent that Jake did. “I understood her as soon as I read her. Working with Colin was a delight”, she said. The actor recently revealed the vigorous routine he followed to get in shape, including doing 2000 sit-ups a day. “It’s a total head to toe workout – you do one three-minute round and you’re toast”.
The 34-year-old star admitted he was terrified ahead of his role as Billy “The Great” Hope in Southpaw because he didn’t want to look like an “idiot” with his limited boxing knowledge.

Director Antoine Fuqua also went above and beyond to make sure Gyllenhaal trained “like a real fighter” coming to the gym twice a day along with him.
