Rafael dos Anjos stops Donald Cerrone in 1st round
Given “The Notorious'” previous declaration of his intent to fight for a lightweight title next, dos Anjos actually welcomed the idea and issued a challenge to McGregor.

“The card is headlined with champion Rafael dos Anjos taking on No. 2-ranked and Denver’s own Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone” for the UFC lightweight title.
The bout was originally supposed to take place for the UFC title in May 2012, when dos Santos was the defending champion. He’s going to enjoy the holidays with his family while allowing some nagging injuries to heal up but he won’t take his eye of the prize and when the UFC comes calling with the next fight. Holloway knows deep down that he gave McGregor his toughest fight thus far in the UFC and he’s now riding an eight-fight win streak inside the Octagon.
If the UFC was unhappy with the expletive-filled tirade, it’s apparently not affecting their plans to push Diaz into a big money fight with Irish superstar Conor McGregor. McGregor and his coach, John Kavanagh, have expressed interest in fighting at lightweight in 2016. No one wants to see that, you know you’ve already beat them motherf**kers!
It’s hard to argue with that.
But there are two divisions which are still “stuck in the mud”, and would greatly benefit from a super fight, similar to McGregor – Dos Anjos/Cerrone. His last loss was in a unanimous decision in 2013 to Dos Anjos.
The Denver-born Cerrone, 32, couldn’t get his offense started and was sent reeling after Dos Anjos began connecting with a barrage of punches. It was the biggest fight of his career, and Cerrone didn’t show up.
Cerrone attempted to hide the effects of the kick, but it was obvious he was badly hurt.
Dos Anjos then caught Cerrone with a flawless knee to the midsection, that backed Cerrone toward the cage.
Back then, dos Anjos was a jiu-jitsu fighter who needed to find a way to the mat to be successful. Markos landed a takedown, only to be immediately reversed.
Later in the UFC post match press conference, dos Anjos added more to provoke McGregor to come up to the lightweight arena by saying that it is not a smart move on his part.
Dos Anjos has shown a big improvement in his striking over the last few years. I told him, ‘thanks a lot, but I’m done with stuff. “I just proved that I’m in this division to say. I am surrounded by great people”.

Since beginning his mixed martial arts career in 2006, after a stint as a professional bull rider and another as a kickboxer, the 32-year-old has been steadily climbing the sport’s ladder. Earlier this year, after defeating Myles Jury on January 3, Cowboy returned two weeks later to take down Benson Henderson on January 18 after Henderson’s opponent pulled out of the fight and Cerrone just so happened to be in the area – that turnaround is about four months ahead of schedule.
