Rahami called ‘friendly,’ but he changed after Afghan visit
The suspect in Saturday night’s bombing in New York City that wounded 29 people is in a hospital recovering from bullet wounds after a shootout with police. The discovery of Tannerite may be important as authorities probe whether the two New York City devices and the pipe bomb at the Jersey shore are connected.

The man wanted in connection with a series of explosions in Manhattan and New Jersey – now deemed an act of terror – over the weekend has been arrested after a shootout with police. “I know there are other devices, I don’t know what they’re made up of but they’re going to have to be removed”, Bollwage said.
He said that the agency will continue its investigation and find out more about Rahami’s presence on the social networks, but authorities would not provide more details at this time because the investigation is in progress.
These were the two pressing questions confronting authorities in NY – a city both tense and under massive security – as officials started trying to question the man they believe was responsible for a string of explosions that rocked the region. Reports are that the officers were not seriously hurt.
TV footage showed Rahami was on a stretcher and his right arm seemed to have been wounded.
When officers responded, Rahami pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking an officer in the chest.
NY mayor Bill de Blasio said officials had every reason to believe the series of bombings “was an act of terror” though investigators said Rahami’s exact motive was not yet clear.
The pipe bomb that exploded Saturday in Seaside Park went off before a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors.
Suspected New York, New Jersey bomber Ahmad Khan Rahami was charged Monday with five counts of “attempted murder of a law enforcement officer”, according to a statement from the Union County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s office.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said Rahami could be armed and unsafe. No one was injured.
Agents stopped “a vehicle of interest in the investigation” at 8:45pm on Sunday, FBI spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser said.
Neighbors had complained to Elizabeth officials that the Rahamis’ restaurant was a late-night nuisance, Democratic Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said.
Rahami was identified by investigators using the cellphone attached on the explosive device made out from a pressure cooker, as well as his fingerprints left on the device, according to authorities.
Peter Bilinskas said he was standing by his desk at his Linden bowling-supply shop when he heard what sounded like gunfire and saw a man walking down the street with a gun in his hand.
– New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday the bombs found over the weekend have similarities, suggesting “there might have been a common linkage”.
In addition to the five charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Rahami was also charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful objective, Park said.
President Barack Obama speaks about last Saturday’s bombing in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood in New York, Sept. 19, 2016. Four blocks away on 27th Street, a pressure-cooker device was found with a piece of paper with writing on it close by, officials said.
“He [the officer] went to rouse the person, who was sitting in the doorway”, Linden police Capt. James Sarnicki said Monday in an interview.
Rahami is a naturalized US citizen from Afghanistan.
