Congress party vice president Rahul Gandhi started a two-day visit to Rajasthan on Thursday to re-focus attention on the controversies surrounding chief minister Vasundhara Raje ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament that begins next week.

Undertaking an 8-km “padyatra” in the villages of the desert state, a day after Congress chief ministers boycotted the NITI Aayog meeting convened by the Prime Minister on the contentious legislation, Rahul also attacked Narendra Modi for his “silence” on corruption.

“Modi government is indulged in corruption”.

Mr Gandhi also reiterated that the party would give ticket for Lok Sabha and Assembly polls only to those people who would work on the ground and roads for farmers, labourers and poor.

Praising the previous Congress government in Rajasthan led by Ashok Gehlot, Gandhi said it provided free medicine to everyone while the present BJP government in the state was closing down hospitals. Not an inch of farmers’ land will get acquired.

Mr Gandhi’s attacking speech today came a little after Prime Minister had taken a swipe at his brother in law and Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra while speaking at a function in Jammu. “He had made several promises to them, but all empty ones”, he told the audience.

“Like during the British Raj days, remote control of the government here was in London. Because her remote control is in London”, said the Congress leader.

“And lastly, Rahul Gandhi talks of distant management, who reside by distant management typically, can’t see an unbiased and decided Prime Minister and that’s as to why those who’re managed by the distant management from the distant management of 10, Janpath, once more speak of distant management”, he added.

He also hit out at the PM for centralising powers in his hand, and said there is only one minister in the Union government.

Taking repeated jibes at the Vasundhara Raje government, he called it a “Lalit Modi sarkar”. “So what has this Lalit Modi sarkar done so far?” he asked, and then added, “It has closed down 17,000 government schools; it is now closing down hospitals”.
