In the backdrop of the ongoing row at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at Modi government saying they are terrified of people raising their voice. The students were questioned at Parliament Street station and later released.

However, the Congress vice president was angrily greeted by members of the BJP students’ wing-AVBP-with black flags who vociferously resorted to slogans like Rahul Gandhi wapas jao.

Congress, Left, JD(U) and other political parties have blamed BJP led NDA government of scuttling the freedom of expression in campus like JNU.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of the university, K Kasturirangan, today visited the campus and took stock of the situation even as four Deans of JNU wrote to VC Jagdesh Kumar to protest against the manner in which police “crackdown” was “allowed by the university”.

They demanded release of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union ( JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was remanded to three-day police custody by a Delhi court on Friday. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said, “These students are not school-children”.

Earlier in the day, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, Government will not tolerate any anti-national activities in the country. “BJP will urge Congress to not insult our martyrs for political reason”, BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said.

Rajnath Singh told the Left leaders that no innocent person will be harassed.

The Minister said, he has given necessary instructions to Delhi police commissioner to enquire about the incident.

Several leaders also criticised the Centre for arresting Kanhaiya Kumar for sedition, as protests demanding his release intensified at the university.

Dozens of policemen swarmed the campus in south Delhi to look for more students suspected to be involved in the protest on Tuesday in JNU.

He has been charged with sedition and conspiracy for allegedly indulging in anti-India activities. Being the vice-president of the grand previous party, the nation anticipated that he’ll condemn anti national slogans.
