Rahul meets Dalit family in Una, announces Rs 5 lakh aid

Reacting to the court’s observations, the Congress today said that Gandhi will not tender an apology and will instead substantiate them with historical facts and evidence before the court to support his claim.

The state has witnessed huge protests after seven Dalit youths were flogged publicly in Mota Samadhilya village of Gir-Somnath district last week. Gandhi assured justice to the victims and announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for them, reported The Hindu.

Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting here on Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi also said that the Modi government had mistaken its parliamentary majority for a “licence to impose its narrow ideology” on the people. “He even gave me his phone number”, told a young man who the Congress vice-president.

He watched the video clip of the assault on the youth at the village, which had gone viral and the incident has been widely condemned.

Amid sloganeering and protests from opposition, Gehlot said: “An FIR has been registered and action has also been taken under the act for atrocities against Dalits”. Singh, whose speech was disrupted quite often by Congress members, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “very sad and hurt” after he came to know of the details of the incident on his return from foreign tour on July 12. “It appears government here is trying to suppress other community members also”, Kejriwal said.

“I request all political parties to commit themselves to eradication of such atrocities”, the Home Minister said. “You can’t make collective denunciation”, observed Justice R Nariman. “This is a social problem”. There was a Congress government then.

As opposition members agitated, Naqvi said a short duration discussion on the issue will be taken up on July 21.
