Rahul Gandhi is set to embark on a whirlwind tour of Uttar Pradesh, beginning 6 September, to build up support for the Congress party ahead of the crucial 2017 Assembly elections. He will cris-cross as many as 233 Assembly constituencies in a bid to give a push to the Congress ca-mpaign for the state electi-ons for which Sheila Diks-hit has been named the chi-ef ministerial candidate.
Announcing the decision, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said Gandhi will hold corner meetings in 21 districts and also hold roadshows in another 18.
Asked if the Congress VP would visit Ayodhya, Azad evaded a direct answer saying, “He would visit whatever places that would come in between and not to create any controversy out of it”, as per PTI. It has undertaken a series of public outreach initiatives – a three-day bus yatra through western Uttar Pradesh, Rahul’s interaction with workers in Lucknow and Sonia’s road show in Varanasi. “He wants to stop BJPs developmental and good governance agenda in Uttar Pradesh”, its National Secretary Shrikant Sharma said.

The Congress is hoping Gandhi can revive its fortunes in the poll-bound state, where the party has been on a steady decline since the late 1980s.
