Raiders’ Woodson to retire at end of season
They just don’t make them like Charles Woodson anymore, which makes it extremely hard to say goodbye. “I’ve been emotional all day, really, so it will be that way Thursday for myself and my family, friends, for Raider Nation”.

Speaking to reporters Monday night, Woodson, 39, said making the Pro Bowl “would mean something”.
“It certainly won’t be the same for me”, said quarterback Philip Rivers, whose voice cracked Sunday when talking after the game. “At the same time, you want to send him out right”.
“Honestly, I think physically I could do it”, said Woodson, who despite his age and injuries is second on the team in snaps. “I never intended on playing as long as I have, but this is the way it”s happened and I”m so grateful for it.”. In that storied 1997 season Woodson was a first-team All-American, Sporting News Player of the Year, Chic Harley Award, The Bronko Nagurski Trophy, The Chuck Bednarik Award, The Jim Thorpe Award, Jack Tatum Trophy recipient, and the victor of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football. He has five interceptions and three fumble recoveries so far this year. His leadership, toughness and work ethic are unmatched. But Woodson goes out at the top of his game, playing at a level that puts him among the top in the game today. Long before becoming the Raiders head coach, it’s where he led Hayward High to the North Coast Section 2A championship in 1979, a game that still ranks among his all-time favorite moments.
Compiling 65 total interceptions, 11 defensive touchdowns and 20 sacks, Woodson will ride off into the sunset as one of the NFL’s most decorated defensive backs.
Despite a rough season for the San Francisco 49ers, the team is still sending a couple players to Hawaii this January.
Woodson himself started his winery in Napa – just an hour north of Oakland – shortly after being drafted by the Raiders. They looked at Woodson’s Pro-Bowl caliber play and figured there was more left in the tank, enough to stick around while the Raiders completed a long-awaited comeback to the postseason. He returned to the Raiders in 2013.
“I’m a player that people considered to be done a few years ago”, Woodson said recently. “It was a lot of fun”. Lacy is really a desperation start if you have no other running backs to turn to. He then told his teammates in an emotional meeting that he was retiring. “Thursday is going to be his final home game, it’s going to be a good one to watch”.
San Diego wrestles with an old foe in the Oakland Raiders on Christmas Eve, in what could be the Raiders’ last game in Oakland.
Already earning a reputation as a reliable route-runner, Abbrederis showed it on Sunday when Rodgers zipped a 15-yard pass to him on a crossing pattern. Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Deion Sanders, Tom Brady, Jim Brown and more all immediately spring to mind when it comes to those who have broken the mold in the National Football League, but who has had the greatest career out of them all? He was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month in October, the fifth monthly honor of his career.
It was a nice bounce-back game for Cooper, who was blanked the previous week against Denver but against Houston had six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns – his first two touchdowns since November 8 against Pittsburgh.
We have eight quarters of football left to appreciate seeing Woodson on the field for our Raiders. How foolish we were to doubt him once again.
Del Rio didn’t provide any other details on Edwards’ injury, suffered on the first drive of the game.
