A source told ESPN FC that the German club had requested that the game be played at 6 p.m., but City did not have stadium stewards available to cover the game at that time.

Article 26.03 of UEFA’s rules and regulations reads: “If the match can not commence for whatever reason (eg condition of the field of play), it must be played either the next day or on a reserve date or other date set by the UEFA administration”.

“That was important for us, but City could not make that possible”.

“We’re not happy with that”. That was no help because hotel was not a problem.

The Group C fixture was called off shortly before kickoff at the Etihad Stadium due to a deluge of rain which left the game unsafe to go ahead.

A statement from the club read: “Torrential rainfall across Manchester throughout the evening led to flooding in the areas around the ground, which forced the decision on safety and security grounds”.

In 2013, Juventus and Galatasaray resumed their Champions League Group B game on a Wednesday afternoon with 32 minutes on the clock after snowfall caused an abandonment the previous evening.

‘It’s hard for us because we prepared for this match, but it’s harder for our supporters because they had a long journey here and bought their tickets, ‘ said Monchengladbach defender Oscar Wendt.
