Rain related death toll crosses 50 mark in Tamil Nadu

AIR correspondent reports, Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu has been devastated by the north-east monsoon rain and heavy rains due to low pressure. New trough that was formed because of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, it has told that, it could also lead to heavy showers in Vellore and Kancheepuram districts.

A report from Cuddalore said incessant rains had severely damaged standing crops in Chidambaram and Panruti.

Seven districts in the state have announced holidays for schools and colleges as heavy rains continue to lash the state. Schools and colleges in northern districts remained closed. The communication network and electricity has not been fully restored in many areas exacerbating the situation drastically. Office-goers were stranded due to water logging in many areas and those who braved the rain were stuck in traffic. The decision to shut down educational institutions was the third such such instance since November 9, when heavy rains had lashed the state, as reported by NDTV. People in several parts of Chennai staged protests against water stagnation and waterlogging. Also a delegation of ministers were rushed to Cuddalore to oversee relief and rehabilitation works. Power supply was disrupted in a few areas. Cuddalore district which was 180 KMs away from Chennai was severely hit. Community kitchens have been opened at 26 centres to supply food and drinking water to the affected people.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, the Coast Guard has located 40 boats in two locations and efforts are on to retrieve them.
