Raising Quality of Education Will be Top Priority: Javadekar

Education for all and raising the quality will be the “top priority” of Prakash Javadekar who today took over as the HRD Minister.

Smriti Irani, who had a stormy tenure as the HRD minister has been moved to Ministry of Textiles replacing incumbent Santosh Gangwar, who will be now Minister of State for Finance.

The announcement of portfolios for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’snew-look Cabinet that came on Tuesday evening saw some big portfolio changes among the existing ministers.

On Wednesday several others Ministers also took charge of their new Ministries and promised to work for development, streamlining justice delivery system, early passage of the GST Bill and ensuring speedy implementation of projects.

About her new portfolio, Irani vowed to strengthen textile and apparel sectors and said her efforts will be primarily directed towards skill development and engaging more youngsters. Many regarded her as unqualified to deal with universities as she had only completed one year of a correspondence course from Delhi University. “Unless you rebel, unless you challenge the status quo, how can you innovate anything”, he said, emphasising the Modi government’s focus on innovation in education.

The family of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula and his comrades at the Hyderabad Central University believe Smriti Irani’s transfer from the HRD ministry is a “political gimmick” by the BJP ahead of the UP polls due next year.

“I had a word with her in the morning on phone”, the Minister said.

He was included in the Council of Ministers even when he was not an MP and was given the charge of three key departments – Independent charge of Environment Ministry and Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs.

Asked about his elevation as a Cabinet minister, Javadekar said that for taking the responsibility of HRD ministry, “You need to have a Cabinet minister”.

Similarly, two of the three Muslim ministers, Najma Heptulla (a doctorate in cardiac anatomy) and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi are stuck in minorities welfare (Naqvi also has parliamentary affairs); the third, MJ Akbar, emerged with the best portfolio, as MoS, external affairs.

Authorities said that the minister may take up the new education policy immediately.
