Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ sets new box office record on opening day

According to Bollywood Hungama, the latest release by Rajinikanth in the Hindi market has managed box office collections of just about Rs 4 crore – it said that this is not the final figure and that it will be updated, but the likelihood of it being moved upward in any big way is not likely.

The film witnessed nearly 90 percent occupancy across South India, whereas the Hindi version, which released across the rest of the country, saw anywhere between 40 to 60 percent occupancy.

Salman Khan’s Sultan, which had the earlier distinction of opening to the highest first-day collection this year at Rs 36.54 crore, was only available in Hindi.

However, contrary to most reports, the film’s producer S Thanu claimed that “Kabali” raked in Rs 250 crores on Friday itself.

Trade analyst Trinath believes only a Rajinikanth-starrer can register such huge opening.

“The start has been phenomenal with Rs 13.5 crore. But since the review is not that great, there will be a drop in its collection from Monday”.

The movie, which had reportedly minted Rs 200 crore from its pre-release business, is also on a winning spree in North America.

“Kabali” released in over 400 screens in the U.S. and Canada.

“It is the best collection an Indian actor has ever had”.

The film grossed 1.92 million dollars through premiere shows and has added another 700k on Friday with Tamil and Telugu versions put together.

“Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh has declared Kabali No 1 in Malaysia as he tweeted”, If this is not EARTH-SHATTERING, what is? The film also had special premieres in the US, the UAE, Malaysia and the UK.

The Indian box office figures are largely based on estimation from trade analysts for the lack of a centralised system or authentic regional systems.

The Rajinikanth film seems to be unaffected by the mixed reviews.

As for the film itself, Kabali that released yesterday also features Radhika Apte in the lead role opposite Rajini.

A statement issued by the makers read, “In India, the film has earned Rs 250 crores, which includes Rs 100 crore from Tamil Nadu and Rs 150 crore from places outside the state in India”. The Rajinikanth fever was also felt in parts of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Kerala and even in Delhi.
