Ramirez homers twice as Padres blast Mariners

The Seattle Mariners struggled to explain how they erased a 10-run deficit in just two innings to stun the San Diego Padres 16-13 Thursday night.

Mariners: LHP Wade Miley (5-2, 4.95) is scheduled to start the final game of the split, four-game series. Leading the Cleveland Indians 14-2 after 6 1/2 innings, the Mariners allowed 12 runs over three innings and eventually fell victim to the most improbable of comebacks as Cleveland scored a run in the 11th to win 15-14.

Seager drove in the Mariners’ first run with a single in the first, and he hit a two-run double off Rea immediately in front of Lee’s three-run pinch homer off left-handed reliever Brad Hand in the sixth.

Thanks to a seven-run fifth inning, the Padres took a 12-2 lead Thursday and appeared to be on their way to an easy win.

Manager Scott Servais called it “kind of a freak deal” that happened while Hernandez was stretching before Tuesday’s game, a 16-4 Mariners victory.

Baltimore failed to record a single homer in the opening three games of the season, but they teed off seven times in the fourth as Mark Trumbo and Adam Jones registered two each, while David Ortiz went deep for the Red Sox with a three-run effort in the sixth.

“That was just an unbelievable experience and something I’ve never been a part of”, Seager told reporters, per MLB.com . He pitched seven shutout innings against the Braves on May 22, following that with a six-inning, four-run start with seven strikeouts against the Cubs. He finished the night with three hits and five RBIs. Paxton, called up to replace the injured Felix Hernandez in the starting rotation – not the easiest of tasks – nearly didn’t make it out that first inning. Seven straight singles led to these runs. The two clubs play six times over the next 10 days.

Blowing a 10-run lead?

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Colin Rea throws against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning of a baseball game Thursday, June 2, 2016, in San Diego. The Mariners loaded the bases with two outs but still hadn’t scored. Steve Cishek worked a scoreless ninth for his 13th save in 16 chances.

Korean star Dae-Ho Lee also helped the Mariners, who went 11 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Mike Montgomery gave up three runs in one-third of an inning after allowing only five runs in 30 innings over his 19 previous appearances…the Mariners allowed a season-high 20 hits.

Instead of Derek Norris’ ensuing fly ball possibly ending the inning, it was a sacrifice fly to give the Padres a 4-3 lead.

Ramirez hit a pair of two-run homers and an RBI single.

In Miami, Christian Yelich hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 12th to lift the Marlins over Pittsburgh. Jay and Alexei Ramirez each had an RBI single.

Nelson Cruz cut the deficit to 5-2 with the longest home run at Petco Park this season – a 445-foot drive to right-center in the top of the fourth. “They were all clean hits”.

Servais even credited Leonys Martin, who is on the disabled list, but with the team.
