Rams rally past Cowboys in Los Angeles return

DE DeMarcus Lawrence is expected to sit out the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

Quarterback Tony Romo, rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott, tight end Jason Witten and left tackle Tyron Smith were held out of the game for Dallas.

Oh, what an ending though.

More games must be played as well as many more practices, but the Cowboys couldn’t have asked for a better start in what was Prescott’s first outing as an National Football League quarterback, despite a 28-24 loss Saturday night against the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason opener for both teams.

“I surprisingly wasn’t nervous”.

Prescott answered quickly, connecting with Terrance Williams on a 32-yard touchdown 1:32 into the second quarter. “It was like they clinched the playoffs, as far as they were concerned. So that was fun”. Well, the first play was a kickoff return that was returned for a touchdown, not the best of starts.

The NFL hasn’t been in LA since the Rams and Raiders moved out during the mid-1990’s, and what better way to welcome it back than with a matchup against America’s Team? Tolzien hit running back Jordan Todman for a 42-yard scoring strike with 1:50 remaining in the first half.

“We talked to him and he was getting a little stiff, so I said, ‘I’m not going to mess with it, ‘” Fisher said.

But Jones threw an incompletion while attempting a 2-point conversion.

Goff’s second pass – after being hit by Cowboys linebacker Derek Akunne – was a wobbly throw that was easily intercepted by Mark Nzeocha.

Dallas turned that turnover into a field goal and a 24-7 lead, and Goff looked more comfortable in his second series. Prescott only threw 23 interceptions in college against 70 touchdown passes in 4 years. Mannion replaced Goff to start the third quarter. The drive stalled after an incomplete second down pass to wide receiver Pharoh Cooper, followed by a sack on third down. In his one half of action, Prescott completed 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards. Mannion led the Rams on two touchdown drives that pulled them within 24-21, but also threw an interception.

“There’s always good things that happen and things you learn from”.

Both coaches kept some of their starters out, because they want to keep them healthy and ready for the regular season.

This wasn’t exactly the kind of return the Los Angeles Rams hoped for.

It did not start well for the Rams – the Cowboys returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown – and Goff struggled in his first series after entering the game in the second quarter.
