In his fifth season, the three-time Pro Bowler broke out, throwing for 3,837 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. He received 48 of the 50 votes with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer getting one vote apiece.
That wasn’t the only award he wound up taking home before the night was out.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) runs to his station after huddling with teammates during practice in preparation for the Super Bowl 50 football game Friday Feb. 5, 2016 in San Jose, Calif. “It took years of hard work and dedication, and now we are reaping the benefits”.
Newton led the Panthers, who were picked to finish third in their division behind the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons, to a surprising 15-1 record, and now the franchise’s second Super Bowl berth.
Newton is the sixth player to win the Heisman Trophy then go on to win the MVP award. St. Louis RB Todd Gurley was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year and Kansas City DB Marcus Peters won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
