The University of Maryland issued a statement Thursday on the heels of a report that head coach Randy Edsall would likely be fired following Saturday’s road game at Ohio State.

A New York Times report in 2008 indicated that before Syracuse hired Doug Marrone, it reached out to gauge Edsall’s interest in taking over after Greg Robinson.

The Randy Edsall era may soon be finished at Maryland.

The Terps have struggled so far this season and, according to InsideMDSports, Edsall will be kicked out once the team enters its mid-season bye week.

“Randy Edsall is our head football coach and he’ll be on the sidelines Saturday against Ohio State”, the school told ESPN’s Brett McMurphy in a statement.

Since taking over head-coaching duties with the Terps ahead of the 2011 season, Edsall has compiled a 22-33 record, taking the Terps to a pair of bowl games, both losses. With the next five games against Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State, they may open the season 2-8 before finishing with Indiana and Rutgers. However, beyond this weekend (barring one of the biggest upsets in all of sports), Edsall may be out of College Park after a 2-4 start to the season. Maryland was shut out 28-0 by Michigan in its conference opener last week and ranks 13th in the Big Ten in scoring offense and 12th in scoring defense.

Regardless, it appears a coaching change at Maryland is inevitable barring a massive and immediate turnaround.

Edsall’s contract was extended for three years in June, but just $500,000 of the $7.5 million was guaranteed money.

There has also been high-profile uncertainty at quarterback, with preseason position-battle victor Perry Hills replaced after the first two games.
