On Wednesday night, the Rangers got what they had arguably deserved several times during their run to the top of the NHL when they played poor-to-mediocre hockey and had somebody (usually their goalies) step up and save the day. The start to this season and the play of both their goaltenders proved exactly that as both have given the team an opportunity to win whenever they’re in goal. Price left the game after 40 minutes with an apparent injury and was replaced by Mike Condon.
In the spate of two days, the IceCaps lost their first- and third-leading scorers to the Canadiens, with right-winger Bud Holloway (5-15-20) promoted Sunday, the day after fellow forward Sven Andrighetto (6-9-15) got the call. Henrik Lundqvist allowed five goals on 24 shots, but he didn’t stand much of a chance with the way the Rangers were playing in their own end. They were just beating us, especially in the third. He’ll be back, as will the Rangers.
The Rangers came out with a little more jump and poise in the second period, but still went down 2-0 when a bad bounce enabled the puck to get passed Dan Girardi behind the Blueshirts’ net, caroming right to Pacioretty, who found Smith-Pelly alone in front for a jam shot passed Lundqvist at 2:25. His Rangers were out-classed throughout the majority of their game against the Nashville Predators on Monday night, but still managed a 3-0 victory thanks to their All-World goaltender, who made 31 saves to once again have a disjointed offensive performance swept under the rug.
The Canadiens were clearly the better team for the first half of the game and jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring early in the first and second. “Make a couple of quick passes and it seems to be in the back of your net”. Nash scored a power-play goal with 2:18 remaining to cut the Canadiens’ lead to 2-1. It isn’t clear if the injury is related to the lower-body ailment that just cost Price nine of Montreal’s last 11 games.
