Rangers get pitchers Lucas Harrell, Dario Alvarez from Braves

Lucas Harrell’s month-long stint with the Braves is now over, as the team has traded him and Dario Alvarez to the Texas Rangers for a prospect. The Rangers are set to receive the pair of relievers, while according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, infield prospect Travis Demeritte will be heading to the Braves. He made only five starts for the Braves this season, all this month, going 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA.

Presumably, Nick Martinez and Alex Claudio will be sent down to make room for Harrell and Alvarez on the active roster once they report.

Harrell was scheduled to pitch again on Sunday.

In his last start for the Braves, Harrell threw six scoreless innings Tuesday night in a win at Minnesota.

Alvarez was 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances for Atlanta this season.

“Looking at both of the pitchers we got, we feel like they can help our club”, Daniels said. It was only Darvish’s sixth start this season after missing all of past year following Tommy John surgery. Blake says both players will join the Rangers.

Two other starters, right-hander Colby Lewis (right lat strain) and lefty Derek Holland (shoulder inflammation) are on the 60-day disabled list and could be back by late August. The 40 man roster had been at 39 after Kyle Lohse was DFA’d, so in order to clear an additional roster spot on the 40 man roster, Matt Duffy, claimed last week, has been designated for assignment.

Alvarez first signed as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies back in 2007, but took until 2014 to make his Major League Baseball debut as a member of the New York Mets.

Demeritte, 21, was Texas’ first-round pick three years ago, being selected 30th overall. This season in 88 games at High Desert, the 21-year-old is hitting.272 with 25 home runs and 59 RBIs to go along with 13 stolen bases.
