Rangers Rally After 3-1/2-Hour Rain Delay, Beat Yankees 9

A rain delay in the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium has kept Texas and NY waiting well past 1 a.m., with no word on when the game might resume.

Ian Desmond homered and drove in two runs, Shin-Soo Choo had two hits and two RBIs and Rougned Odor connect for a solo homer in the eighth, but the Rangers still trailed 6-5 entering the ninth inning. Even if you buy that he only stopped the game in the ninth to ask for a new rosin bag, he must have known that stepping out onto the field and drawing the umpires’ attention to the conditions was going to increase the chances of a rain delay.

A groundskeeper removes the tarp from the field after a lengthy rain delay during a Monday, June 27, 2016, baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers in New York, Tuesday, June 28, 2016. The Rangers have the better lineup and they’ve won three straight overall while posting an 8-2 mark the last 10 games.

Sandwiched between the start of the inning and the Rangers’ four-run rally was a rain delay that lasted more than 3 ½ hours – and that incensed Yankees manager Joe Girardi. I mean, we were one pitch away from winning a baseball game; instead we lose by three runs. You know it’s the second time we’ve brought our closer in and it started raining, but tonight it was raining for a long period of time. Aroldis Chapman walked the only batter he faced before rain stopped the game. He managed to hit three batters in that ninth inning, all three in two-strike counts too.

“I wouldn’t have a problem starting the next night”, Girardi said.

“I think our intention was to finish that game”, said crew chief Paul Nauert, according to Marchand.

The Rangers look to continue their impressive season as they face off against a Yankees side that is having an up and down season despite some of its jersey donners having big seasons on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. “You’ve got to give both teams an equal, fair opportunity”.

“It is the rules”, Girardi said. “It’s hard for me to understand what happened tonight, how it got to this point, but it did and we lost”. Why in the ninth inning when we were trying to win the game? “I think between the rain delay and the rain, I think pitching in it and playing in it-you saw how the guys were running the bases”.

Adrian Beltre then laced a two-run single to left for a 7-6 Texas advantage, and following a third hit batsman by Yates, Elvis Andrus also drove in two runs later in the inning with a single to right.

“What matters is they allowed this game to be completed”, he said. When does health become a concern? His 16 total bases set a club record, and his five hits and six runs batted in were career highs. “We were going to wait as long as we could”.

“Today’s a weird game”, said lefty Andrew Miller, who pitched an inning and allowed a home run. The Yankees announced 1B Ike Davis cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Before the delay, Mark Teixeira was one of three Yankees to get three hits, including a seventh-inning home run to put NY in front 6-4.

NOTES: Carlos Beltran was the Yankees DH for the second straight game, but he said it’s not because his knee is hurting.
