Rangers score C Lucroy from Brewers

Lucroy can not block a deal to Texas, which is an important note considering he blocked an agreed-upon deal to Cleveland earlier in the week. In exchange, the Rangers are sending right-hander Luis Ortiz, outfielder Lewis Brinson and another player yet to be named to the Brewers.

Bolstering the bullpen was a top priority for the National league-leading Cubs, who are striving to win their first World Series in 108 years, and AL Central frontrunners Cleveland, who last won the crown in 1948.

Offensively, too, Lucroy provides a spark for teams, as he is hitting.300 this season with 13 home runs and 50 RBI. He is due roughly $1.5 million the rest of this season, after which he has a $5.2 million team option for 2017.

On his verified Twitter account, Lucroy wrote, “Now, moving on to the @Rangers let’s take this bad boy to the ‘ship!” Steep price, but you got a really good catcher and a solid relief arm, and didn’t give up Jurickson Profar or Joey Gallo.

Jeffress had 26 saves with a 2.27 ERA in 46 appearances for Milwaukee this season. He likely will be in a setup role for the Rangers behind Sam Dyson. With the Astros losing three straight, the Rangers have pushed their division lead to six games, the biggest gap since the All-Star break after leading by as many as 10 games in late June.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) –Jonathan Lucroy says he’s been traded to the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

This year with Double-A Frisco, Brinson was batting.237 in 77 games. And the deal for Beltran included 2015 first-round draft pick Dillon Tate plus a couple of less-heralded but still promising young arms. He is 4-6 with a 3.48 ERA in 16 games combined this season for Class-A High Desert of the California League and Frisco.

The Dodgers (59-46) couldn’t trade Puig, but they were busy at the deadline as they prepare to chase San Francisco (61-44) over the final two months of the NL West race.

Daniels discussed the catcher with Brewers officials last winter and spring, and thought the chance to get him was done when the Indians had an agreement with Milwaukee.

Beltran signed a $45 million, three-year contract before the 2014 season but played with an elbow bone spur during much of his first season in NY and got off to a slow start in 2015 following surgery.
