Ranieri rues stage fright as Hull City stun Leicester

Leicester City became the first defending champions to lose their opening game since 1989 after newly promoted Hull City prevailed at the KC Stadium on the first day of the new Premier League season.

Adama Diomande put Hull ahead in first-half stoppage time, Riyad Mahrez leveled from the penalty spot just after the restart and Robert Snodgrass scored the victor in the 57th minute. The goal was credited to Diomade but the hosts were pegged back two minutes after the break as Riyad Mahrez hammered home a penalty.

Riyad Mahrez scored a controversial penalty to level matters before Snodgrass’ victor.

We started well, we created chances to score a goal but at the end of the first half we conceded a goal after a corner. If it wasn’t for an own goal by Sunderland debutante Paddy McNair, Guardiola’s start might not have been as compelling as it seemed.

Few have given Hull much of a hope this season after a summer of turmoil, both in terms of Steve Bruce leaving suddenly, and the ongoing situation with the ownership having an impact on the playing squad and the preparation.

Leicester faces Arsenal next week and Ranieri knows teams will be out to shoot his team down.

Spurs lost the France captain to injury 10 minutes before half-time but inspired but the introduction of new signing Vincent Janssen, they equalised just prior to the hour mark when Erik Lamela stooped to head home Kyle Walker’s cross. “In the second half, they played better”.

“I was relieved, thrilled.the whole emotions came out because it’s been hard for every one concerned. He can now show his quality in the Champions League, I’m very happy with him”, he said.

Ross Barkley gave Everton, managed by new boss Ronald Koeman, a fifth-minute lead at Goodison Park with a free-kick that eluded everyone and curled into the net.

Lloris limped off with a hamstring injury in the 36th minute and his replacement Michel Vorm kept the visitors afloat with a fine save on the stroke of halftime, denying Gerard Deulofeu who was sent clear by an very bad back pass from Danny Rose.

“We need to learn from the errors and get it right for the next game”. I think this was the key of the match.

There were 1-0 victories for West Bromwich Albion at Crystal Palace and Swansea City at Burnley, and also 1-1 draws for Stoke City at promoted Middlesborough and Watford at Southampton.

Leroy Fer scored Swansea’s late victor against Burnley and a header from West Brom’s Salomon Rondon gave the visitors their victory at Crystal Palace.
