Ranked Djokovic beats Sock in Montreal

“I never played him before so it took me some time to really figure out what his patterns were of the serves, his game in general”, Djokovic said on the ATP Tour’s official website.

Djokovic, the tournament’s top seed for the fifth straight year, made quick work of the 35th-ranked Sock 6-2, 6-1.

Prior to the match the ATP had fined Kyrgios for remarks directed at Wawrinka about his girlfriend picked up by a courtside microphone.

Rafael Nadal got past Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-3 in the evening draw.

“I’m just going to try to keep my head down in the match and be as competitive as I always am and hopefully play well, and no hard feelings either way at the end”.

Doubles specialist Jamie and Australian John Peers edged fellow Scotsman Andy and Indian Leander Paes 6-4 7-6(9). It was far from a Murray classic with only 54% of first serves but he will be delighted to have comfortably won through after last week’s defeat. “He played great today”.

A mid-set lapse from Murray allowed Muller a route back in as he broke straight back, but three double faults from the world number 46 restored the two-break cushion for Murray, who then held to book a last-eight spot against either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Bernard Tomic. In a night match, fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan faced Belgium’s David Goffin.

Novak Djokovic stayed on course to win yet another title by outclassing Jack Sock to reach the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Thursday.

But the three-time champion said he “felt in control of the match” after breaking the American’s serve in the sixth game of the first set.

“In addition, Kyrgios has been served with a “notice of investigation” which begins a process to determine if his actions also constitute a violation of the Player Major Offence provisions”.

In the second set, Sock made another unforced error on break point to go down 3-1.

“At the beginning of the match I think we were both a bit rusty”, said Djokovic.

Djokovic started the final game of the second set with a attractive drop shot, and Sock sent his return long on triple match point.

Djokovic will face Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis (No. 87) in the quarter-finals.
