Ranked Rafael Nadal wary of ‘Top Player’ Del Potro

Relatively unknowns but highly-rated tennis stars – Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta and Kevin Anderson of South Africa – clash swords in the other men’s semifinal match of the day on Saturday. For this U.S. Open, however, both Djokovic and Murray withdrew because of injury, as did the defending champion, Stan Wawrinka, so Anderson acknowledged that “some of them gave us a chance”. “This year since the beginning has been a very emotional year”.

It seemed to be all over in the third set when he broke Federer to go 3-2 up, and with the momentum and a sold-out Arthur Ashe crowd in his corner, he sealed the deal with another forehand victor.

“I feel better with my backhand, but it’s not good enough to win a title like this or to win the top guys in a row”. I’m okay with it, and I tried until the very end. It makes this match truly unpredictable, but compelling at the same time.

Nadal’s response was devastating, breaking Del Potro three times in succession and conceding only one unforced error to dole out a bagel in the second set.

Match point. Always a special feeling and a tough one!

“If he serves well and hits his forehand well, he’s a player who can beat anybody”. “I’m dealing with just trying to understand what happened and just to overcome this in the next few hours, days, weeks, whatever it is, you know. He’s had many injuries but the way he has come back is a great example to the kids”, he said praising Anderson.

That moment eight years ago has been the biggest grand slam highlight for del Potro, who has undergone four wrist surgeries in his career.

Del Potro has always been a sentimental favorite on the tour, a status created by his lengthy battles against wrist injuries, which required four surgeries.

“Of course it is a pity, but Juan Martin deserves it more”. He only had to cover 60 per cent of the court most of the time. Not only must he be dominant on serve, but he’ll also require some help from Nadal, whether it be a poor service game here and there or just generally looking out of sorts.

Federer was on the brink of defeat when he trailed 0-30 on his serve at 5-3 and while he regained his composure to win the game the momentum had shifted and Del Potro clinched the match with yet another forehand victor in the next game. But he tweaked his back at a tournament last month, curtailing his preparation for the US Open, and he was not quite at his best for stretches. Their wonderful rivalry has included 37 matches, and at least two finals at each of the other majors.

“It has been a long road”.

Talking about his opponent on Sunday, Nadal said that he will not underestimate his opponent.

“This is why we work so hard”.

“Playing against Rafa in my favourite tournament, I will try to enjoy the atmosphere and the game”. Anderson dominated the majority of the match, scoring 22 aces to Busta’s one, and hitting 58 winners against Busta’s 21.
