Ranked Spieth misses cut at Riviera

The world number three fired five birdies in a four-under-par 67 in his third round to join five other players on 10 under, two shots behind leader Bubba Watson.

There was plenty of power at the top besides Kokrak, who has never won on the PGA Tour.

Low scores at Australian Open: ADELAIDE, Australia – England’s Holly Clyburn shot a 7-under 65 for a share of the second-round lead with 46-year-old Catriona Matthew of Scotland in the Women’s Australian Open.

Kokrak is ranked No. 210 in the world and is winless in 110 previous PGA Tour starts, and there are 20 players within five shots of the lead, including major winners Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Charl Schwartzel, Justin Leonard and Justin Rose.

He made eight birdies and one bogey in what was a stunning performance and the Ontario-born star climbed up 11 places to open up a slender one-shot advantage on -10.

After carding the worst opening round of his professional career – going eight over the card to kick-off proceedings – Spieth then missed the cut following a 68 on day two. So this is about as easy as it can play right now, good weather and the greens are really soft. “Not everyone is just going to fade away”. I feel like I play well here a lot. “They have a lot more firepower, so obviously I’m hitting 3-iron into [No.] 15 and Dustin [Johnson] is probably hitting like an 8-iron or something like that”. This time, he played too much of a fade around the eucalyptus trees, and it tumbled down the hill next to the concessions stand. His chip raced by the hole, leaving a downhill par putt form 18 feet that he made for par.

“It’s a ball-strikers golf course, so even though you have shorter irons in, you still have to hit them in the right spot”, Reavie said. Last year, he enjoyed a beer and famously asked reporters – “Can I?” – about opening it while conducting interviews.

He made fours on all three par-fives, with No. 17 being the most spectacular.

PGA Tour tweeted a photo of the touching gesture from McIlroy, alongside the caption: ‘Rory’s tee shot hit this fan.

“I found it very hard to trust the way the golf course is playing and I didn’t get off to a good start because of that”, the Masters and US Open champion added.

“This is one of the best fields on the Tour”, said Kokrak.

Scott is playing just his second event of the season after finishing well back at the Sony Open but not only has he won this event previously he has also finished runner-up so this is a golf course that he clearly enjoys.

However, the world number six bounced back by making three birdies on the back nine and subsequently catapulted himself into the lead heading into the final round on Sunday. Johnson was bombing shots off the tee again at Riviera. “I would love to win this one”.

Spieth won’t play next week’s Honda Classic, instead returning for the WGC-Cadillac championship in two weeks, followed by a title defense at the Valspar Championship one week later. It’s just very odd to see some of the ball flights.
