Rare Full Cold Moon Brightens Christmas Sky
Today’s full moon is the first to appear on Christmas Day for 38 years, and as far as rare astronomical occurences go, it’s pretty easy to spot.

The moon reached its peak size at 6:11 a.m. ET. The next Christmas full moon won’t come around until 2034, NASA says.
This is the 13th full moon of the year. So in the winter in the northern hemisphere, the sun is low in its path across the sky and the full moon – being opposite the sun – is high in its path across the sky.
The full moon every December is usually called the “cold moon” because of the fact that it is the month when the winter cold is experienced.
Then there was also a rare Super blood moon on September 28 – created when the moon passes into the earth’s shadow, creating a reddish tinge – which hasn’t been seen since 1982 and won’t be witnessed again until 2032. Last one was 1977, & there won’t be one again until 2034. “A 19-year cycle of the moon – called the Metonic Cycle – is the reason”.
“Cold” is a relative term this year. On the balmy U.S. East Coast, some people will be tempted to celebrate the holiday in shorts and flip flops, more like Hawaiians. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission has been investigating the lunar surface since 2009.
“As we look at the moon on such an occasion, it’s worth remembering that the moon is more than just a celestial neighbour”, said John Keller of the USA space programme NASA.
