Rare giant squid caught on camera in Japanese bay

Tatsuya Wakasugi, the manager of Mizuhashi Fisherina in Toyama prefecture, told the Wall Street Journal the encounter was the first time a live giant squid was sighted in the bay, where the waters are around 3m deep.

When interviewed, Akinobo Kimura, the owner of a diving shop from Toyama, declared that upon touching the giant squid in order to help it break free from the port, the giant sea creature grabbed his limbs. Kimura said that rather than being afraid, he was quite excited owing to which he made a decision to jump into the water. Probably feeling threatened, the creature grabbed the diver, which reported to have felt a sharp pain from the squid’s suckers. The scientist said that it was an unexpected encounter, and seemed to admire the beauty of the underwater creature. The squid was captured on video using a submersible camera by diver Akinobu Kimura.

The preference of squids for the deep sea has made the Toyama sighting surprising. Japan seems to be the place to find these large beasts: The first-ever images of a giant squid in the wild were snapped off the coast of the Ogasawara Islands in 2004, and the first film of a living adult came from the same area in 2012.

Giant squids are very rarely seen, and a sighting in such shallow waters is even rarer. But, every once in a while, a squid may wonder off into ports or get caught in fishing nets. It measured almost 12 feet in length!
