Rashford set for big season

The goal helped United win 1-0 and Mourinho maintain his 100 per cent start to the Premier League campaign.

United’s next match, after the worldwide break, is a derby clash with Manchester City – who Rashford scored one of his eight club goals last season against.

At the KCOM Stadium, United secured their third successive win under Mourinho as teenage striker Rashford finally turned their pressure into a tangible reward.

United were frustrated in wet conditions by Hull’s dogged defending before the 18-year-old Rashford struck by converting Wayne Rooney’s cross.

David Meyler was fortunate not to be punished after raising an elbow to deflect a shot in the Hull box while Phelan’s men could have scored when Tom Huddlestone’s late shot was deflected wide. “As players, we could see how much the result meant to the fans, and the fans could see how much it meant to us and the whole club”.

Phelan confirmed Robert Snodgrass will have his injury assessed by Scotland’s medical staff after the winger was forced off against United due to a tight calf.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made an impressive start to his Manchester United career.

Rashford, who burst onto the scene last season under previous boss Louis van Gaal, would have thanked elder statesman Rooney for his victor. “To keep the clean sheet is very important and to increase our confidence in the work we are doing”.

Paul Pogba and substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan both had long-range efforts that missed the target, and the match looked set for a draw until Rashford’s late intervention.

“We need players in here”.

Mourinho has clearly been impressed with what he has seen of Rashford, but insisted his striker’s match-winning goal will make no difference as to how and when he will use him this season. Watford’s Roberto Pereyra reduced the deficit in the 57th minute, but the Hornets remain winless.

Marcus Rashford’s injury-time strike sent United fans wild, with many spilling onto the pitch as the rush forward sent bodies flying.

“We’re hoping bids will be accepted by a lot of clubs”, he said.

“In the second, the team brought a different gear and he did the same”.

Claudio Ranieri’s side took the lead in the 32nd minute when Jamie Vardy finished off a typically efficient counter-attack from the champions and captain Wes Morgan lashed in the second in the 52nd minute.

“It was an unreal feeling and even a few of the lads in there (the dressing room) said it was like taking them back to the old days when they sometimes used to get those smash-and-grab wins”.
