Hodgson had previously said he would announce his 23-man squad soon after the Australia game, but he will now “leave it as long as I possibly can”.

The 18-year-old has impressed since breaking into the United first team this season and could be offered the opportunity to push his claims for a Euro 2016 squad place at the Stadium of Light later.

Though he was included in Hodgson’s provisional 26-man squad for the summer finals in France, there was an expectation he would be among the players to miss out on final selection.
