Rashford set for England debut but little time to shine

Paul Scholes is relishing the prospect of watching England’s Euro 2016 campaign and sees no reason why they can not progress deep into the tournament – although he does not think Roy Hodgson’s men will go all the way in France. He was one of the quickest players I have ever seen.

“Look, I’m a striker and you are going to miss chances”.

The striker was moved to his natural central position alongside Harry Kane in the later stages of the Turkey match, from which he won a penalty for the Three Lions before eventually finding the net.

The 18-year-old’s impressive performances have earned him a spot in England’s provisional squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 and Hodgson claims he is not afraid to give youngsters a chance.

“We’re definitely optimistic, but the message from the manager was we have to defend better if we’re going to go anywhere in the European Championship”, the Tottenham left-back said. “Everybody knows what I think about Rooney”.

Roy Hodgson has told Marcus Rashford he will make his England debut on Friday after the teenage Manchester United forward was passed fit for what will be his only chance at worldwide level to show he should make the final cut for Euro 2016.

The England boss also highlighted the fact that Vardy is not desperately needed for the Australia match, considering his recent displays and the fact his squad is boosted by a clutch of players.

Hodgson said: “I’m not planning an experimental team, but we have only three preparation games and already quite a lot of people – seven players – have missed the first one”.

His absence at the Etihad campus yesterday was untimely and bolstered the hand of Manchester United teenager Marcus Rashford, who could now start against Australia on Friday having recovered from the injury that forced him to be substituted in the FA Cup Final win over Crystal Palace.

When asked in Tuesday’s press conference if it was worth betting on him as top scorer, however, he was sat firmly on the fence: “You can do what you want!”

He scored 24 goals for Leicester as they surpassed all expectations to clinch the Premier League title and has also bagged three goals in as many games for England.

“I was told to make the normal runs I would if I was down the middle, to create space for Danny (Rose) in the first half”.

But Hodgson expects him to return to the fold in good condition.

“Obviously the skipper [Rooney], when he comes back, he normally takes them so we will see what happens in the next game”.
