Ratification of extradition treaty between India, Indonesia deferred

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari earlier said that the concerned agencies of the two countries were working together on the matter of extradition, adding that there was full cooperation from the Indonesian side.

“Indonesia is the largest ASEAN member and India looks forward to its continued support as we move to increase our engagement with ASEAN member states as part of our Act East policy”, Vice President said while addressing a joint press conference with his Indonesian counterpart Jusuf Kalla here.

“This cooperation is necessary as each India and Indonesia have dedicated themselves to scale back carbon emissions by 35 per cent and 29 per cent respectively by 2030”, he stated.

“India and Indonesia have similar aspirations to have an open trading system through global organisations like the WTO”.

On skill development, Ansari said that India is offering a number of scholarships under various programmes to Indonesia.

Ansari also said that a MoU for cooperation in cultural field was also signed. “This is a relationship that our successive leaderships have cultivated over the years”, he added.

The Indian vice president will also visit Brunei.

Vice-president Hamid Ansari plays the traditional Ramadan drum “Bedug”, Southeast Asia’s largest, at Istiqlal mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday.

On Monday, Ansari will hold official talks with Kalla, and also call on President Joko Widodo.

“Ansari and Kalla also discussed possibilities of expanding cooperation in defence and counter-terrorism through intensification of the existing mechanisms”, an official from the Ministry of External Affairs told Bureaucracy Today.

Both sides are also set to exchange notes on acceptance and coming into effect of the Extradition Treaty and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

The Vice President said that as the countries in the East Asian region strive for greater economic integration, the safety of sea lanes – critical for maritime trade and commerce, maritime security, and access to marine resources in accordance with accepted worldwide norms, continues to assume greater significance.
