Rays blast 5 homers in rout of Padres

As rough as the Rays’ season has been, manager Kevin Cash improved to 128-151 in his two seasons with Monday’s win, surpassing Joe Maddon’s win total in his first two seasons.

San Diego Padres’ Edwin Jackson pitches to the Tampa Bay Rays during the first inning of a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“I really felt like this year was the first time I’ve really learned how to play the game the right way”, Myers said.

Before leading off in the first inning of Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres, Franklin was in the on-deck circle. Friedrich will carry a 4-9 record and 4.69 ERA into his next start at home against the Cubs. He also fanned in his final three plate appearances Tuesday. Jackson (3-3) lasted only four innings, giving up nine hits and eight earned runs.

“It comes down to me, I haven’t done anything to really get the offense going”, Myers said.

On Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, the 25-year-old was struck in the head by a teammate’s bat while standing in the on deck circle. Kiermaier was stretching a few feet in front of Franklin, swinging the bat over his head with one arm. Franklin was wearing a helmet.

Franklin passed a concussion protocol test. Logan Morrison drove in two with a double, and Maile and Nick Franklin each added RBI singles.

After being checked by head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, Franklin stayed in the game and drew a leadoff walk, then scored on Brad Miller’s two-out homer. But he did not take the field for the second inning, and the Rays scrambled their lineup with their regular middle-infield starters, shortstop Matt Duffy and second baseman Logan Forsythe, already injured.

Forsythe hit his fifth homer in his last 13 games off Luis Perdomo (5-7) to put the Rays up 3-1 in the second.

Evan Longoria had three hits and his 27th homer while tying Carl Crawford atop the Rays’ career list with his 1,235th game played.
