Indians 2, Tigers 1: Marlon Byrd’s tie-breaking leadoff home run in the seventh inning backed the combined four-hit pitching of Josh Tomlin and three relievers as Cleveland defeated Detroit.

Ellsbury struck a double to help the Yankees to their win over the Rays but it was his steal that got his side moving and was the first start steal of home by a Yankees player in almost 15 years. His RBI single in the sixth gave the Yankees the lead that they’d never let up. The last one was a home run off Detroit’s Jose Veras on August 11, 2013.

Ivan Nova (1-0) won in relief of CC Sabathia.

The New York Yankees are in need of a prolonged winning streak but need their offense to come around. That performance earned Snell Minor League Player of the Year honors from multiple outlets while also garnering him one-inning stints in the All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati and the Southern League All-Star Game in Montgomery. A balk moved the runners to second and third while Gardner was batting.

The Yankees trailed 3-2 in the fifth when Ellsbury singled with two outs and Didi Gregorius followed with a single off Matt Moore (1-1).

For the first time in almost 15 years, a Yankee baserunner pulled off a straight steal of home.

Mr. Steal Your Plate. So once he did his interviews, responded to the long and loving texts from his dad, who was coaching a junior college team in western Canada, and collected the souvenirs – first-pitch and first-strikeout balls, plus the personal thrill of striking out childhood hero Rodriguez – he was looking no further than sharing the moment and a good dinner.

Even with the four runs, the Angels have scored the fewest runs in the majors (53) through their first 18 games.

Girardi gave an update on Hicks after Saturday’s game: “He has what’s called traumatic bursitis, I believe, inflammation in his shoulder”. He is considered day-to-day. The play tied the game 3-3; the Yanks would go on to win 6-3.

To put the icing on the cake, he rose to the occasion by outpitching his former Japanese teammate Hisashi Iwakuma. Snell’s first major league strikeout came on a 2-2 curveball that froze veteran lefty Brian McCann, a 73 miles per hour lollipop that started up in McCann’s eyes only to drop into the strike zone at his knees for strike three. The rookie helped himself out, however, by retiring the first batter in each of his five innings and showed the type of stuff that made him the 52nd overall selection in the 2011 draft by Tampa Bay. However, Snell’s debut on Saturday came late enough in the season that Snell won’t be able to accumulate a full season of service time this year, and thus won’t be able to reach free agency until after the 2022 season.
