Dixons Carphone shares rose 5¾p to 464½p.
As per the agreed terms, Sprint along with Dixons Carphone Connected World Services (CWS) will initially open over 20 new Sprint stores in select U.S. markets under a pilot program.
It is targeting 6pc of the Irish market in the next five years, as stated by Mark Slater, the newly appointed managing director of Dixons Carphone Ireland.
But it wants Dixons Carphone to provide retail expertise and advice to help it expand further and increase its market share across the States. Sprint has more than 1,000 outlets in the states and its brands include Boost and Virgin Mobile U.S. Best Buy eventually bought the US stores from its United Kingdom partners, but was less successful in the UK.
Nick Bubb, an independent retail analyst, said: “Carphone had a great deal of success with its venture with once-mighty Best Buy in the US and there is nothing to stop them now working with their former rival Sprint”. Sprint will own and staff the stores with CWS managing the locations and providing its “expertise and best practices across all of Sprint’s sales channels”.
The current customers of both Sprint and Dixons Carphone should experience same level of service they’ve always had.
Around 300 Sprint/RadioShack stores will be completely renovated to the new store-within-a-store model, with the remainder scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Dixons Carphone plc is a multinational electrical and telecommunications retailer and services company.
Dixons Carphone, the new company formed from the merger of Dixons and The Carphone Warehouse, is to launch its new Irish mobile phone operator in August. A few €6 million has been invested in opening a data centre to support iD in Ireland, and the network is expected to create up to 50 jobs.
It is one of the largest retailers in the UK and owns brands including Currys and PC World.
