Rdio Lays Out Shutdown Steps Starting November 23, Following Pandora Acquisition

News of Rdio’s shutdown and sale to Pandora took the world by surprise, but it also left current Rdio users wondering what would become of their subscriptions. The company will send other details needed in an email in order to make the transition to Rdio Free as smooth as possible.

Like we said it was not mentioned as to when Pandora’s purchase of Rdio’s assets will be complete, so it is unclear as to when Rdio will be officially shuttered, but either way if you are a Rdio subscriber, perhaps it’s time to start looking at alternatives. And, no, you won’t be able to subscribe to Rdio starting on the 23rd, either (and we’re not sure why one would even want to). “I couldn’t be more optimistic about Pandora’s future and the future of music”. All subscriptions will be canceled as of tomorrow, although you will still receive the services that you paid for. After your subscription ends, you can continue to listen to Rdio for free as long as you don’t mind listening to the ad-supported stations, ad-supported on-demand music, or ad-supported playlists.

While it is true that Pandora’s radio-centric format has allowed it to enjoy smaller government-fixed royalty rates as compared to rivals, it has only managed to limit its audience to the United States, Australia and New Zealand. This might be the beginning of the weeding out process that determines which streaming music services survive, and which ones die. This would include the “exact timing of Rdio’s end of service” and “information on exporting” any existing Rdio data such as playlists and favourites.
