Rea injured in Marlins debut after trade with Padres
Two people familiar with the deal say right-handers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea have been traded by the San Diego Padres in a seven-player deal to the Miami Marlins, who were eager to shore up their rotation for a playoff push.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported, citing a source, that Miami will also get pitcher Colin Rea in the deal. Wie-Yin Chen, their major free agent acquisition this past offseason and fourth starter, has a 4.99 ERA through 19 starts and went down with an elbow sprain on July 24. The deal’s true impact, however, won’t be known for years, until Naylor and Castillo (and Cosart and Capps, for that matter) develop.
On Tuesday morning, the Padres completed a trade for Upton with the Blue Jays for minor league pitcher Hansel Rodriguez.
But the Marlins began this process with a dubious farm system, and executives believe they have stripped most of the few intriguing pieces to take what might not even amount to a 50-50 chance to be the second wild card.
Capps, 25, is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. Guerrero made his major league debut earlier this season, pitching two innings in relief.
Rea, 26, has set career-highs for the Padres this season in almost every category, going 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA (55 ER, 99.1 IP) and 76 strikeouts against 44 walks with a.262 (101-for-385) opponents batting average in 19 games, 18 starts. Richards was 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA in six starts this season after going 28-16 the previous two years.
The 29 year old Cashner was the longest tenured Padre, having been a member of the team since 2012.
But those who praised the Padres were not fond of Cashner, a talented guy who has battled both injury and the perception that he underachieves with quality stuff.
Usually the offense is holding back a solid Padres pitching staff, but this year it’s the other way around.

“I think so”, the struggling Yankees slugger said Friday night before the Yankees’ game at Tampa Bay. He’s capable of reaching triple digits on the radar gun but generally throws in the mid-to-high 90s. He was excellent in 2013 and in 2014, however, with a combined 2.87 ERA in 50 games. However, the electric reliever can top out at 100 miles per hour on his fastball, and was 1-0 with a 1.16 ERA in 31 games last season for Miami. Miami acquired reliever Fernando Rodney from the Padres on June 30 for prospect Chris Paddack. The Yankees’ return for two months of Aroldis Chapman was reflective of this, as NY got an established and versatile major league arm, Chicago’s top shortstop prospect, a recent first-round pick in the outfield and a minor-league speedster.
