Royals’ co-chairman sat alongside the 54-year-old at a press conference this afternoon where he was finally unveiled as the club’s new manager.
McDermott guiding Reading into the top flight as champions in 2011-12, only to depart the following March.
Brian McDermott had been working as an Arsenal scout before returning to Reading.
McDermott guided the Royals to Premier League promotion in 2012 with a stirring run of form that saw them win 15 from 17, after originally slumping to 16th in the Championship in November of that season.
McDermott succeeds Steve Clarke, who left the club earlier this month, in charge of the Championship outfit.
Co-chairwoman Lady Sasima Srivikorn said: “History tells us he is one of only two managers to ever have earned this club promotion to the Premier League so, alongside his vast experience in football and wealth of knowledge of the game, Brian also knows exactly what it takes be successful at Reading”.
“We are very proud of getting him back, we move onwards and upwards, it is the best Christmas present we could have had, that is for sure”.
“It feels like it is the right thing to do, which is important”.
There are plenty of new faces that McDermott will be meeting over the next few days as heads turn to his first fixture against Blackburn on Sunday, he added: “I was picking a Blackburn team at 1am this morning”.
