Ready or Not, Here’s Dak as Cowboys Starting QB

The Dallas Cowboys are not sure when they will get back Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo after he suffered a compression fracture to his back. Tony Romo was injured after a Cliff Avril sack on his first pass attempt of the preseason. The Cowboys went 1-11 in games played without Romo past year after he broke his left collarbone twice.

“We’ve been given a lot of timetables”, he told reporters in a Sunday morning press conference.

Rookie Dak Prescott has played well during preseason games, but Garrett wasn’t anointing him the starter for the Cowboys’ Sept. 11 opener against the New York Giants, just as he wasn’t ruling Romo out.

“Yeah, again, like with every player on our team, we’ll take the situation day by day”, Garrett said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “So you’ll see him around wearing that”.

“I think the biggest thing for all of us is focus on doing our jobs”, Garrett said. Romo is listed, as is the wont of National Football League coaches, as “day-to-day”, and Garrett was cryptic about his starting quarterback’s availability.

Rookie fourth-round draft pick Dak Prescott will take over until Romo returns.

“Adversity is a part of the game”, said Garrett.

While the Cowboys have typically been left in shambles when Romo missed time in seasons past, losing 13 of their 14 contests when he was not under center, this season promises to be much different and the team is quietly confident that Prescott can capably hold the fort while Romo is on the mend. You come to work the next day and you put the next guy in there and if everyone will focus on doing their job, that’s the best way to create a good environment for someone who’s coming in to play. “Everybody focus on doing their job and I think our team understands that”.
